Sweet Confinement has completed its run. It was a tremendous show and SiNNERMAN Ensemble thanks all those who were either involved in making it happen or who came out to see it. You’re the best!
Nov. 17-Dec. 17, 2011 at the Viaduct Theatre (3111 N. Western Ave.)
Written by Anna Carini and directed by Brea Hayes
Penned by SiNNERMAN Ensemble co-artistic director and playwright Anna Carini, the After Dark Award-winning play (Outstanding New Work, 2008, among three other wins for the production that year) Sweet Confinement is a Chicago original and represents a homecoming of sorts for the SINNERMAN theatre family.
The story is of five young adults brought together in an unexpected reunion in a bathroom. In its original incarnation, the show sold out its run and was also a critical success. Kerry Reid, for the Chicago Reader, wrote: “What makes this world premiere SiNNERMAN Ensemble production work . . . is [Carini’s] acerbic-but-not-jaded dialogue, a cast of committed young actors … It all adds up to a little show with a big heart that spills past the edge of the realistic all-white set and dares us not to care about these people.” Kay Daly, for Time Out Chicago, described the show as “a truthful, well-observed portrait of life in miniature.”
“Sweet Confinement finds five people who have grown up together, shared love and loss together, meeting in a familiar bathroom to deal with a crisis on hand,” Carini, who is also a part of the production’s cast, said. “They must confront the actions that have brought them there together as well as each other and the history they all share. Can they handle it? How do they handle it? And how will they ever move on from here?”
The show kicks off SiNNERMAN’s fifth anniversary season. Performances during the show’s run — Nov. 17-Dec. 17 — will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays and 3 p.m. Sundays. During Thanksgiving week, Thursday and Friday shows will be canceled, though a special industry night show will be held the following Monday, Nov. 28.
A portion of SiNNERMAN Ensemble’s proceeds from Sweet Confinement will benefit NoStigmas, a phenomenal Chicago-based grassroots project dedicated to raising awareness and erasing the stigmas of suicide and mental illness by collecting and sharing stories of hope and inspiration.
